Super nice single speed or average geared bike?
Im looking for a new bike right now and i am kind of a newbie but I'm wondering whether i should get a really nice single speed or an average geared bike. I'm looking to spend about 300 to 400 dollars. I've been checking craigslist for used bikes.
I will probably use this bike just around the city doing no more than 10 mile rides. I'm not a serious biker.
I live in the LA area. Not quite suburbs.
A good question that almost everyone has to ponder at some point. A few extra things for you to think about:
1. Start off by going into a bike shop (a real bike shop) and talk about what sort of riding you want to do. You'll find that most bike shop owners/workers work there because they like cycling and are usually more interested in getting other people into the sport than trying to sell them something that won't work for them. Do you want an upright type of bike, all terrain or "racing" style? Find out what you can get brand new for your budget and then double your budget. You should be able to get a good used bike, 1-2 yrs old for 1/2 the list price
2. You'll get a much better quality single speed bike than a geared bike for any amount of cash. Better quality means that it'll need less maintenance and last longer. If you aren't going to be doing serious riding and you don't live in a hilly area, a single speed is likely to give you the best bang for the buck. Try one out at the bike shop and get advice on sizing from them.
3. Another advantage of a single speed bike is that there's less to maintain. Cheaper geared bikes (especially derailleur - the most common type of gears) can be cranky to adjust so that they work well
4. Once you've familiarized yourself with prices, check out craigslist. Things to look out for in a used bike include;
* no bends or cracks on the bike frame - look carefully all over
* wheels are true - when you hold them off the ground they spin without wobbling side to side or up and down
* the bike's been looked after - is the chain very greasy or rusty? Are the parts corroded?
* the make/component quality - you can get some idea of this when you visit the bike shop but the real difference in price between different bikes usually comes down to the quality of the components more than anything else
